pAIN management
Are you suffering from ongoing pain? Is your pain interfering with your life? Do you feel that you’re no longer yourself because of your pain? We want to help you to get your life back…
Pain can be useful when it warns us of potential or actual injury and encourages us to rest and protect the damaged tissue while it heals. But what if pain persists after tissue healing has occurred? What if it outlives its usefulness and now it’s preventing you from doing the things you need to or want to do? This is called chronic pain and it is a result of subtle physiological changes which take place in the nervous system.
A thorough assessment can help determine what factors are contributing to your pain. Next we can address these factors by: using treatment techniques, teaching you about how pain works, setting progressive achievable goals and by working in conjunction with other health professionals. Together we can help you in your journey back to regaining your life.
There is nothing worse than a persistent cough, recurrent chest infection or debilitating sinus headache or infection.
At Physios in Touch we are well-equipped to assist with treating these symptoms and preventing reoccurrence.
Rehabilitation and post operative care
Physiotherapy after orthopaedic surgery has been shown to play an important role in full recovery.
We will liaise with your surgical team to implement the correct protocol for your procedure. Your condition will be thoroughly assessed, and an individualised treatment protocol will be devised in alignment with your specific goals and lifestyle.
We will help you achieve the best possible result after your surgery so you can return to all your favourite activities that you have been missing out on.
The arrival of a new baby is a joyous and happy occasion! And physiotherapy treatment makes it as smooth a path as possible by assisting with some of the common glitches that can accompany motherhood.
Pregnancy backache? We offer non-invasive, safe, drug free treatment.
Cracked nipples and sore engorged breasts? They are effectively helped with laser and ultra sound therapy. We advise on managing engorgement, breast feeding and postures to prevent back and neck pain so as to make breast feeding enjoyable for both mum and baby.
Mums also need exercises that help “wake up” the pelvic floor muscles to restore normal function and help prevent bladder complications in later life. In addition abdominal/core exercises can help to restore your figure.
PELVIC HEALTH AND INCONTINENCE
Sometimes that sudden laugh or cough or sneeze causes an embarrassing leak. This common condition is called stress incontinence, and is due to weakness of the muscles of the pelvic floor. This can happen to both women (sometimes after pregnancy or menopause) as well as men (after a prostatectomy). This can go away with retraining of muscle function. Most people need about 12 sessions to successfully manage the condition.
The other type of incontinence is called an ‘overactive bladder’ or urge incontinence – when you have to go to the bathroom you have to go right now!
We will assess your pelvic floor function and toilet habits and identify ways that you can reduce or eliminate urinary incontinence without surgery or medication in a private comfortable environment.
Keeping older people active
As you get older, maintaining good health is essential to retain independence and play an active role in your family and community. A sedentary lifestyle predisposes you to a number of lifestyle diseases such as heart disease, diabetes, stroke, osteoarthritis, osteoporosis and cancer, as well as exposing you to the risk of falls. Regular physical activity assists with healthy aging and with preserved physical and mental functioning. Even moderate levels of regular exercise can reduce the risk of early mortality.
Quality of life and function (through strength, endurance and balance training) can be improved at any age. We can assess you and supervise an appropriate exercise programme based on your goals, which may range from basic improvement of function to challenging your athletic abilities. We also run group exercise classes, and the regular participants show amazing improvements in their quality of life and reduction of pain.
Animal physiotherapy
Animal physiotherapy arose as a field of physiotherapy from the needs of the patient. “Now that you have fixed my neck/back up, do you think you could do something for my horse/dog/springbok?”
